The lyrics were, for the most part, collected from two out-of-print books and carefully condensed to form narratives whilst maintaining the integrity of the original poems. The two books that formed the main lyrical source are "Farm Ballads" by Will Carleton and "Cowboy Songs and Other Frontier Ballads" by John A. Lomax, father of folk collector Alan Lomax.
